Hasta luego, mula…hopefully

Of course, as April 15th rolls around we think of our taxes, but today we put on the black veil as we celebrate Mourn for Your Money Day! The year was 1943. Roosevelt was president and tax reform was the topic of discussion.  Usher in the Current Tax Payment Act of 1943.

Imagine you want to have your bathroom redone, but instead of getting a quote for the job and paying the amount owed, you hire a contractor, just give him fifty-thousand dollars and tell him to give you the change when the job is finished.  This seems like an odd way to do business, but this is exactly how we do business with the government. Throughout the year we have a pay-as-you-go relationship with our taxes and trust the IRS to give us the correct amount of change the following year.  Sometimes we even have to pay a little more.  Every couple of weeks, most of us say, “Hasta luego, mula” hoping to be reunited with a portion of it sometime the following year.  Today reflect on how that makes you feel.  Depending on your perspective, you can observe today a variety of ways.

  1. Think of all the wonderful things your tax dollars support.
  2. Mourn all the good deeds and luxury items you’d buy if you didn’t have to pay taxes.
  3. Give Mourn for Your Money Gifts and keep 40% of each gift for yourself.

H L D Y ON MY FR  NDS!

“Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!”

birthday-33087_640Happy Birthday, Donald Fauntleroy Duck! There’s a name if you’re looking for one.   Today is Donald Duck Day and we are celebrating this slightly difficult to understand, short-tempered, yet lovable little duck.  Debuted to the world June 9, 1934, this little prankster worked his way into our hearts wearing only the top half of a sailor’s uniform. How many of us could pull that off?   According to one source I checked, Donald Duck has appeared in more films that any other Disney Character.  Take that Mickey Mouse.

The most obvious way to celebrate today is to watch Donald Duck in action.  A more interesting way to celebrate would be to have a dinner party requiring everyone to dress like Donald Duck.  Hmmmmm…. If you go with the second option, I’d be very selective about my guest list.  “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!”

HOLIDAY ON MY FRIENDS!!!

UDD

No, it’s not a new STD, it’s Upsy Daisy Day!  Did you wake up on the right side of the bed this morning?  If not, get back in and start over.  Created in 2003 by Stephanie West Allen, today reminds us to wake up gloriously, gratefully and gleefully every morning.

giphy (1).gif

GLORIOUS. Get out the bed like you’re a rock star!  Someone thinks you’re special and at the very least, you should think you’re special.  Don’t let anyone ruin your wake up.  Let go of things from the night before and get out the bed with a grand production.  Make waking up an event.  You’re glorious and the world is anxiously waiting to see what you’re going to do today!

GRATEFUL.   You survived the night!  Be grateful you’re waking up at all.  Who knows how many times you may have rolled dangerously close to the edge of the bed or almost used that toilet in your dream?  You’re a survivor, so wake up grateful for the millions of breaths that could have been your last.

GLEEFUL. Wake up like you live in Disneyland.  You should be gleeful and full of wonder about the great things in store.  Don’t give your first thoughts of the day to anything negative.  Think of all the amazing things you can accomplish or at least give the old college try.  And when things get difficult, you can Upsy Daisy and …

Ruuuuuuunnnnnnn!

I’m in my stance, dressed appropriately, the gun goes off and I wake up.  It’s National Running Day and if you think I’m going for a run, you must be dreaming.  Bad knees, big boobs, bad back; I’m staying stationary.  Well, not stationary, but I won’t be high-kneeing it down the street.  I’ll stick to the aerobic bouncing exercise on my Total Gym.

If you are a runner or are inclined to start, celebrate today by lacing up and going for a jog.  Run with friends, animals, or strangers in a well lit, highly populated park.  Feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin. If it’s raining, you should probably run indoors.  Running water, the running man, and running your mouth don’t count for today’s holiday.  So, if you must, fake it and run in slow motion.  You can race with other slow motion runners.  Although you may not reap the same health benefits as actually running, you’ll have fun. Ready, set,

It’s Yo-Yo Day!  Today was founded to honor the largest manufacturer of yo-yos,  Donald Duncan, Sr, of the Duncan Company.  Yo-yos have been around for centuries, I’m talking B.C. centuries, but credit is often given to Pedro Flores because he was the first to use the term “yo-yo.” I wasn’t ready for everything I learned about yo-yos. There are a million tricks, maybe not that many, but there are quite a few on YoyoTricks.com.  As long as it’s a toy on a string and not my heart, yo-yo tricks are pretty cool.  I can do them all, but I don’t have time to show you right now.  Have fun today and walk the dog or search for UFOs. You can’t play with mine, but you can play with yours!  Yo-yo and…

The Beasts, Birds, and Trees

Today is World Environment  Day! World Environment Day is basically Earth Day for the entire world.  I say ditch Earth Day and let’s just celebrate World Environment Day with the rest of the world. I’m not sure we need two holidays for the same awareness.  It’s like having a Father’s Day and a World Dad Day.  Overkill, especially since paid leave isn’t an option for either.

giraffe-1959110_1280Connect with Nature is the theme for this year’s festivities. If you’re in Toronto, you can join the festivities in person.  If you’re not in Toronto, you can do anything from standing outside taking in the view to rolling around in the grass.  I’m not sure these things do anything to preserve nature, but they definitely connect you on one level or another.  We all can join the iNaturalist Movement and help catalog nature around the world.  This is pretty cool, especially if you have children or enjoy watching the beasts, birds, and trees in your own backyard.  If you’re anything like my Mom, you’ll be doing this behind a glass window, inside the house, safe from everything outside.

Whether you subscribe to Trumpology or actually believe the world is worth preserving, take time today to appreciate what is here now.  Dig your toes in the dirt and…

40+ and Winning!

oldmaid2We’re living longer, fuller, more fabulous lives, no wonder we’re still winning!  It’s Old Maid’s Day and we’re celebrating! Not the most endearing term for the fabulous and forty, fifty, or more, but today if the crown fits, wear it well and in good company.   Some sources say this holiday started after WWII when many weddings or potential weddings became casualties of the war. Started in 1948 by Marian Richards, today is for the women who have not married, nor had any children, but deserve a day just like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Just a Thought. Should Old Maid’s get a tax credit for reducing their carbon footprint by not adding another human being to the mix? I think so! Energy Saver!”

Celebrate today with a girl party, a game of cards, or doing something you couldn’t do with children and a husband; like relax all day long with your feet up and your favorite book, movie, and drinks or take a spontaneous trip.   When people ask me why I’m not married, I say, “I’m waiting for an offer I can’t refuse.”  Keep winning and…

I say, I say

Foghorn_LeghornIf you find you’re repeating yourself today, don’t panic, it’s not early onset Alzheimer’s, you’re just celebrating.  It’s Repeat Day!  Take today to repeat doing something you enjoy doing, like walking, watching your favorite movie, or playing your favorite song over and over.  If yesterday was a good day, repeat yesterday today!  It’s your prerogative, but I wouldn’t suggest repeating anything you don’t like to do or a bad relationship.

Visit that friend of yours who repeats themselves a hundred times in one conversation or call your Uncle who actually does have Alzheimer’s and celebrate with him.  You could keep having the same conversation over and over with yourself, something you probably already do.   To those of you who think being repetitive is insane, it’s only insane if you expect a different result.  Since it’s Repeat Day, you should be expecting the same result.

Hey Bubba!

It may sound country, but it’s National Bubba Day!   Bubba is a nickname often (if you’re country) given to the oldest brother.  Today we aren’t celebrating older brothers, just all the people we call Bubba!  If you know a Bubba, give them a shout out, a balloon, a cake, or something celebratory!  If you don’t know a Bubba, today is the perfect day to give someone a new nickname.  You can also dub yourself Bubba!  In addition to the balloons and cake, celebrate today by watching some of the great Bubba’s in action.  I suggest anyone of the first 3 Police Academy movies and of course Forest Gump!

It Does a Body Good

family-1350741_1280Since day one we’re sucking on mother’s milk in one form or another.  It’s World Milk Day and it still does a body good. Healthy teeth, bones, vitamin D, and many other benefits can be attributed to a nice glass of milk.  I love milk although as I’ve gotten older milk doesn’t love me like it used to, so I’ve switched to Lactaid.  I suggest celebrating today with a nice glass of milk (if you take it in a glass).  If you have a problem drinking it straight, you can always have ice cream, a White Russian, or hot cocoa, although I’m pretty sure you won’t be getting the same nutritional value as a glass of pure pasteurized fresh milk.  You can also be a bit nostalgic today and enjoy some great milk commercials.  There have had some great campaigns. Drink up and…
