What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day

As if my dog needs one more thing to make him feel like he is my equal.  We already share a couch, a bed, a car.  I fear that if he had thumbs, he’d try taking over the kitchen.  On the other hand, I’d enjoy having him learn how to lift and lower the toilet seat.  Last year, when the snow prevented me from opening my front door, forcing me to open the back door slider and shovel 3 feet of snow to let him outside, those opposable thumbs would have come in handy.

On the other hand, if my precious Yorkie were anymore independent, he’d be a cat.  Never a cat owner, myself.  I resent all the pet preferential treatment cats receive and I suspect, had they thumbs, humans would be the teddy bears of their world, with a usefulness limited to cuddling.

At any rate, today is the day we dream of “what ifs” and maybe we can take liberty with this holiday and go beyond opposable thumbs and our pets.  What if we dyed our hair? What if we never stop dreaming?  What if we never stop smiling?  What if…?   So many possibilities and the rest of our lives to try them all out.  Have a wonderful “what if” day!

Read Across America

My favorite two children’s books are Mr. Pine’s Purple House by Leonard Kessler and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.   I still love these stories.  We all know the cliche, “reading is fundamental,” but it really is.  Too often, as we get older, reading becomes a chore instead of an escape.  Today, in celebration of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day, I invite you to make a moment to share a book with a child, yours or someone else’s.  Or you can pretend you’re a child and read to yourself.   Have an imaginative day!

What are some of your favorite books?

Pigs, Peanut Butter, and Fruit

NO! This is not a breakfast recipe!  Today is the day we finally give pigs their proper recognition and honor them for it is National Pig Day!  This highly intelligent domesticated animal is getting his 24 hours of fame and enjoying his nationally recognized holiday.  By the look in his eye, he is probably suggesting that if your stomach should begin to growl while glancing at his photo, you should take this opportunity to celebrate one of the other holidays recognized on March first, such as peanut butter or fruit compote.

Yes, we are celebrating National Peanut Butter Day and National Fruit Compote Day, too! Now if my friend, Snuggles, starts to make your mouth water and the sound of popping grease reverberate in your ear, pump the breaks and grab a jar of peanut butter or fruit cup instead.

Public Sleeping Day

While I wouldn’t suggest getting overly into today’s choice holiday, I think you should definitely celebrate PUBLIC SLEEPING DAY!  I don’t think it matters if you do this in groups or individually.  The main point is that you nap and make it public.

Personally, I enjoy the occasional car cat nap from time to time, but if you’re anything like my sister, you’re a serial napper, so today is your day.  Seize the moment and celebrate like you mean it.  At the mall, the park, or standing up in line.  This holiday can be energizing and a lot of fun.

Tip:  If you’re a silent sleeper avoid celebrating in funeral homes.

Enjoy your day!

For the Foodies

Good Morning!  Today we celebrate Let’s Eat Right Day.  I’m also choosing to celebrate the related food holidays of National Clam Chowder Day and National Chocolate Covered Nut Day.  Not a contradiction if your soup is low-fat and your chocolate is dark.  And, just in case the two previous February booze holidays didn’t encompass your beverage of choice, it’s Open That Bottle Day, too.  What’s different about this beverage holiday? The husband and wife team that created it were very specific.  This is not a day to get sloshed alone, this is a day to gather and fellowship with friends and family.

Have fun and holiday on my friends!

Do a Grouch a Favor…

Today is honestly – Do a Grouch a Favor Day!  It is also National Almond Day.  I recently learned that although a handful of almonds a day is good for you, eating this fruit, yes, fruit, raw from the wild can actually be poisonous.  So today, I implore you to share a handful of almonds with a Grouch.  Tomorrow, give them the raw fruit.  I’M JUST KIDDING! LOL! Grab a handful of fruit and have a great day.
