Tweed, not Tweet!

jacket_tweed_3How fitting that today is Tweed Day!  Not because you are stunting in your tweed jacket, but because it’s “Politics Gone Wild” out here.  Rather than calling attention to your sophisticated sense of style, Tweed Day is calling you to pay attention to politics and the possible corruption taking place.

“Boss Tweed” born, William Magear Tweed, is most known for stealing millions of dollars from New York City in the mid-1800, while serving in a political office and as the “Boss” of Tammany Hall.  Get the entire story from Wikipedia or Biography. That’s not what I do here.  But, stealing millions of dollars in the 1800’s is like a billion dollars today, right.   So, the point of today is not to celebrate this crook, but to remind us to get involved in our local, state, and the federal government.  I suggest you:

  1. Find a cause you are passionate about and join a local activists organization of like minded people trying to make a difference.  It’s not enough to complain on Facebook and Twitter.  Who are you, Donald Trump?  You’ll never get anything done that way.
  2.  Know more about U.S. government than the most recent legal immigrants.  Refresh your basic government knowledge.  There are three branches of government and Washington D.C. is not a state, although they would like to be.   I found this video to help you out – Introduction: Crash Course U.S. Government and Politics.  This guy is funny and informed!
  3. Watch the news once a week, so you don’t become the physical manifestation of “duh” in the next political conversation you accidentally wander into trying to get to the food tray at a social function.
  4. Finally, if you are of age, please register to vote.  It does matter and I can’t believe I still find myself having this conversation with adults.

As individual citizens, we can feel very removed from politics, but we don’t have to be. When we come together, our voices matter.   Just read the Consitution and think about how some of those amendments got there.  It wasn’t because people sat around wishing for a change to come.

Let’s do better.  Otherwise, we’ll wind up with an inexperienced celebrity as our next president.

HOLIDAY ON MY FRIENDS!

Not Talking About Your Checkbook

Just in case you went a little too far with the pranks yesterday, it’s Reconciliation Day!  Take today to clean up the mess you made of other people’s houses, feelings, and belongings.

ape-530759_1280Sike! Reconciliation Day is really about mending relationships.   There are many reasons relationships, of all kinds, don’t last, but if there is someone who stays on your mind and in your heart, today may be a good day to call and say, “hi!”  An instant reconciliation may not be in the cards, but reconnecting could be a good start.  Maybe they’ve been missing you too.

I like the saying that goes, “The grass is greener on the other side because it is watered more often.”  Now, I’m not saying you should go through your phone book and call every person from your past.  You know who is in your heart.

There are a few moments in life when we are reminded how precious and short life can be.  Sometimes these are happy moments and sometimes they are tragic. But, when they occur, we tend to operate, for a time, in a space of appreciation; appreciating our life, our friends, and our blessings. Then, inevitably we fall back into whatever space is routine for us, worry, selfishness, recklessness, until the next jolt.  Take today as a reminder, so you don’t have to wait for the next life-altering jolt.  Forget about who’s to blame and what went wrong. Concentrate on love and respect, so you can get your friend, family, and heart back.

With Love,

HOLIDAY ON MY FRIENDS!

Smoke and Mirrors

I bet you thought I forgot about today!  Nope, all smoke and mirrors, which is what we are celebrating today.  Smoke and Mirrors Day is all about the art of illusion and I don’t mean your ex.  I promise if there is a day dedicated to the trifling ways of an ex, I’ll let you know. Today also isn’t about your teenage Jekyll and Hyde or any other personality switch-er-roos.

I’m talking about magic, actual magic (well, as actual as magic can get)!

We are celebrating great illusionists like Harry Houdini, David Blaine, Siegfried and Roy, David Copperfield, Criss Angel, and Penn & Teller.  I’m a fan of the Carbonaro Effect.  Unfortunately, my magic skills are limited to a short number of card tricks and being able to control my crazy for about six hours at a time.  That’s what’s magic about me.  What’s magic about you?

I suggest celebrating this evening by learning a magic trick or watching more videos like the ones below.   Holiday on my friends!

I need this closet in my life!

I would never eat yogurt again if this happened to me!

What’s magic about you?  Let me know in the comments below!

But what’s your point?

For all the conspiracy theorists who have claimed for years that holidays are publicity stunts created by different organizations, the media, and greeting card companies; you’re right!  But, what’s your point? Creating an actual national holiday literally requires and act of congress and if they can’t pass a budget, what makes you think to create National Fruit Fly Day would make it to the top of their list?

So, yes, basically most holidays are created by making a strong declaration and getting others to buy into it (pun intended).  Which brings me to today’s holiday – It’s Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! So, if you search the internet and find someone forgot to nationally recognize Food Theater and you are extremely passionate about potatoes with personality, declare today National Food Theater Day.

I’m declaring today National Striped Sock Day.   stripped-socks-1178643_1280

Don’t judge, choose what makes you feel good and declare your own National holiday. Who cares if you end up celebrating alone in your closet surrounded by striped socks.

On the other hand, if you’re actually interested in initiating an act of congress, I found this document but didn’t read it in its entirety because I wasn’t that interested.  If you are, be my guest.

Have fun and holiday on my friends!

What are you celebrating? Let me know!
