2 Fingers Up

If you remember a few celebrations back, you can pull out your purple armbands today, too.  It’s International Peace Day!  Declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, today requests 24 hours of non-violence.  Does this include Mother Nature?  She certaintly has been having her way with the world the past few weeks.  Everyone dealing with a natural disaster is in my prayers.

Since we aren’t all running for Miss America or Miss Universe, please answer my questions truthfully.  Is World Peace really an option?  What would it take and what would it look like?  The dinosaur age comes to mind.

Celebrate by being individually peaceful to the people in your neighborhood, friends, and family.  This means putting away guns, if you have them, and admitting that your older sister is always right.  Be peaceful and…

World Friendship

To quote the United Nations, “To confront those [world] crises and challenges, their root causes must be addressed by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship.” It’s International Day of Friendship!

I’m not saying you need to frolic on the beach until sunset and end the day with a Hi-Five, but exhibiting a little more kindness today is a good start.  An international holiday, International Day of Friendship is about more than tolerance.   We all “just want to live our lives” for whatever that means to us individually.  What we don’t want is to live every day in imminent danger, yet many do.  The UN isn’t requesting people change their views or beliefs, they are asking that we participate in a culture of peace.  Which means we can disagree without blowing each other up.

Hopefully, we all have friends and at least one that returns the sentiment.  Celebrate today by treating everyone as if they were your friend.  They don’t have to be your close friend or the person you borrow money from, but at least give them the opportunity to be the kind of friend with whom you hold the door open for and share a smile.

Pucker up!  It’s International Kissing Day! A WARNING. Before you go getting yourself dumped, all kissing counts.  So, today isn’t an excuse to French a crush under the guise of celebrating an international holiday.  You can kiss your mutt and still be included in the celebrations.  However, if you are single, today is the perfect day to French your crush and blame it on the festivities. giraffe-2072094_640

Kiss for hello. Kiss for goodbye.  Kiss just because. Today requires no special reason to kiss except to enjoy the affection of two lips pursed with gentle pressure against your skin.  So, plant a couple platonic kisses on your neighbor’s cheek.  Let me remind you, before you go getting too fresh, millions of germs are traded when you swap spit, so swap responsibly.

International Working Women’s Day

This woman looks like she is about to guide a large truck through a small area.  At least she is posed to look like she is doing some heavy lifting.  Her perfect manicure tells me her actual job may be posing and not the manual labor for which she is dressed.   Either way, she is working and that is what we are celebrating today.  It’s International Working Women’s Day!

Celebrated since 1911 in support of better working conditions for women, this holiday is supported by the United Nations and celebrated in 28 countries around the world.  I don’t know if the best way to celebrate is to work or take the day off, but celebrate we must, so whatever your plans are for today, include a personal march with signs, balloons and mini cupcakes.  Have a wonderful day and Holiday on my friends!
